Happy Father’s Day!

Sunday just gone was Father’s Day in the UK and I forgot, at least, I forgot for long enough to miss the post – it takes a while to travel from NZ where I live. This left me with the usual option of making a digital one. While wondering what the hell to do I thought it might be fun to do a portrait of my dad in a Soviet propoganda style, him looking all Lenin like.

I went trawling through photos to find one that I could do a treatment on and came across this candidate:

Near Rotorua 2008. That ground under us is hot - what you can't see is all the geothermal activity around us.

So I set about tracing my dad, using the power of Flash. However, there are some things about Soviet hero imagery that I just couldn’t capture. I think it might be because he doesn’t have a beard. Or it might be the cap. Then again it could be the lack of coat. Regardless, I think the result is more like Chinese communist propoganda imagery, although I’m still happy with the result.

Happy Father's Day Dad!

As you can see, I kind of gave up on the propoganda theme in the end. I would also have put more detail into the eyes, but the original photo wasn’t high enough res to work from really.
